Common Terms

CBT
Computer-based training, typically delivered on CD-ROM, or from a mainframe.

Distance learning
The use of telecommunications technology to reach an audience when the presenter is in one location and the audience is in another location.

Downlink
The process of receiving a broadcast signal from a communication satellite.

E-Learning
The delivery of formal and informal learning and training activities, processes, communities and events via the use of all electronic media like Internet, intranet, extranet, CD-ROM, video tape, DVD, TV, cell phones, personal organizers etc....

Teleconference
The use of telecommunications technology (satellites) to reach an audience when the presenter is in one location and the audience is in another location. (Also known as distance learning.)

Uplink
n. The satellite dish and electronics which transmit the signal; can be fixed or portable.

Video conference
A two way video and audio connections, generallyused as a meeting replacement tool.

Similar to a traditional press release on paper, a VNR is a televised news or feature story that an organization sends to TV stations for public relations or promotional purposes. Can be transmitted by videotape or satellite.

Web-based training. This is “self-paced” training that is delivered using an Internet browser.
